Carl Hiaasen's golf comeback is overcome by bufo toads, monkeys, rats, and a runaway golf cart
Thirty-two years after he quit the sport of golf, bestselling author and Miami Herald columnist Carl Hiaasen returned to the fairways, this time keeping a diary, The Downhill Lie: A Hacker's Return To A Ruinous Sport (Vintage paperback; May, 2009). Appearing at the 25th anniversary Miami Book Fair International with fellow humorist Roy Blount, Jr., Hiaasen recounted a few tales from his golfing comeback--the time he practiced his chip shot on an invasion of poisonous bufo toads; the day he played on a golf course famous for its monkey business; the time he had to fish his golf cart out of a lake; and the occasion on which his heavyweight training club, which he bought after watching an ad on the Golf Channel--but never used, came in handy with a pack of rats. Hiaasen and Blount wrapped the panel up with questions from the audience on superstition; media overkill in 2008 election coverage; and political intimidation of journalists.
